WASHINGTON, D.C., October 9, 2020 – To conclude this year’s World Space Week, DreamUp announces the release of the Space Farmer DreamKit, the second in the DreamKit product line. The Space Farmer DreamKit was made possible in partnership with BASF, the world’s leading chemical company. DreamKits empower learners in classrooms, homes, and after school programs using out-of-this-world STEM educational opportunities to connect Earth-based experiments to science conducted by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).
The Space Farmer DreamKits are now available on the DreamUp website and Amazon.com. Each science kit includes:
- Experiment materials: Seeds, test tubes, growth medium, and other supplies needed to begin growing the plants.
- Exploration Guide: A handbook with detailed instructions, important background information on space science and botany, classroom activities, and more.
- Access to an exclusive online portal: The DreamKit online portal includes images from an experiment sent to the ISS just for this Space Farmer DreamKit. Here, learners can compare their results with plants grown in space. It also includes exciting bonus content, including career talks from scientists, and a forum for students to share their results.
The Space Farmer STEM kit provides directions and materials to grow plants on Earth and compare them to the plants grown in microgravity on the ISS. The launch of this innovative educational learning experience opens new frontiers for students of all ages as they learn firsthand about the similarities and differences of conducting experiments on Earth and in space. Food production in microgravity is important to the future of space exploration as scientists work toward supporting astronaut health during longer journeys from Earth, such as those needed for human settlement of the moon and Mars. The release of this DreamKit demonstrates the future of hands-on, STEM learning and provides access to space for countless learners and young explorers around the globe.
Allen Herbert, Interim CEO of DreamUp, commented, “We are excited to provide a cost-effective science kit that allows students to engage with relevant topics in space science and biology. We are optimistic that the activities in this kit will inspire the next generation of explorers, innovators, and future space farmers as they participate in a hands-on learning experience. In order for people to travel further into space and settle other planets, we will have to grow our own food!”
